Description
Essencia Single Malt Whisky Barrel Chunks 100g come from genuine, freshly emptied Pōkeno single malt whisky barrels. These whisky-soaked oak chunks offer a fast way to add authentic barrel character to homemade spirits.
The original barrels aged whisky for approximately 4–10 years. Unlike dry oak chips, these chunks retain the charred barrel interior and whisky-soaked wood. As a result, they release rich whisky flavour, colour and oak character into your spirit.
You can use Essencia Single Malt Whisky Barrel Chunks with neutral spirit, vodka, pot-distilled whisky, bourbon-style spirits, rum and even beer. Their generous surface area helps the spirit interact with the seasoned oak for rapid ageing.
Soaking
Soak 100g of Essencia Single Malt Whisky Barrel Chunks in 2L of spirit for 10 days.
Because individual tastes vary, you can test your spirit during the soaking period to monitor the developing flavour, colour and oak character.
Draining
Place the barrel chunks in a fine straining bag before soaking to make draining easier. This also helps reduce the amount of sediment carried into the filtering stage.
After draining, allow any sediment to settle for a few hours before filtering.
Filtering
Use coffee filter paper in a funnel. Alternatively, place two cotton wool balls into the neck of a large funnel.
Allow the spirit to drip slowly through the filter. For clearer results, avoid disturbing any sediment that has settled at the bottom.
Testing
The recommended soaking time is 10 days. However, individual tastes vary, so testing your spirit during the process can help you achieve your preferred balance of whisky and oak character.
Draw off a small sample without disturbing the sediment and taste it. Once you are happy with the result, drain and filter your spirit.
